Recently, Telegram made a significant change to its FAQ page, removing language that previously stated private chats were protected from moderation requests. This change comes in the wake of CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest in France for allegedly allowing criminal activities to occur on the messaging app. Durov, who initially claimed to have nothing to hide, has now shifted his tone and promised to take a more proactive approach to moderating content on the platform.

Durov attributed the rise in criminal abuse on the platform to Telegram’s rapid increase in user count, which currently stands at 950 million. This growth has reportedly caused “growing pains” that made it easier for criminals to exploit the platform. In response to these challenges, Durov has made it his personal goal to significantly improve the platform’s ability to combat abuse. He assured users that the company has already begun making internal changes and will provide updates on their progress soon.

One noticeable change following Durov’s arrest is the modification of Telegram’s FAQ page. Previously, the page stated that all chats and group chats on Telegram were private and the company did not process any requests related to them. However, the current FAQ now includes instructions on how users can report illegal content using the “Report” buttons within the app. This shift indicates a more proactive approach to addressing abuse on the platform.

French authorities have charged Telegram with distributing child sexual abuse material and facilitating drug trafficking. It was also alleged that the company refused to cooperate with investigators. These legal troubles have put pressure on Telegram to take a stronger stance against illegal activities on its platform. Despite serving as a valuable source of information on Russia’s war in Ukraine, Telegram has faced criticism for its historically hands-off approach to moderating content.

The recent changes at Telegram highlight the growing challenges faced by social media platforms in combating abuse and illegal activities. The shift in tone from CEO Pavel Durov and the modifications to the FAQ page signal a renewed commitment to addressing these issues. However, the platform still faces legal challenges and criticism for its past reluctance to cooperate with authorities. Moving forward, it will be crucial for Telegram to strike a balance between protecting user privacy and ensuring the safety and security of its users.
