Instagram has long been a social media juggernaut, continuously evolving its platform to enhance user experience and engagement. Recently, the company has announced a significant redesign of how Story highlights are presented on user profiles. This change has raised numerous discussions about usability, engagement, and the platform’s overall aesthetic.
In a series of forthcoming updates, Instagram will transition Story highlights from their current position above the profile grid to their own dedicated section within the profile tabs. This move, communicated through notifications shared by social media expert Lindsey Gamble, is intended to streamline the look of user profiles. The new dedicated tab will feature a distinctive rounded heart icon and will showcase vertically aligned thumbnail images for each Story highlight under various topics. This shift has been in the pipeline for several months, with early examples displayed by app researchers like Alessandro Paluzzi indicating that Instagram takes user interface seriously and is constantly experimenting with its layout.
As of now, however, the specifics of how these highlights will coexist with the main grid is still shrouded in mystery. Will they be arranged chronologically based on the last update, or will another sorting method be employed? Such questions underscore the unpredictability that often accompanies changes in digital design, especially on a platform as widely used as Instagram.
Instagram’s chief, Adam Mosseri, recently unveiled the motivation behind this redesign, expressing a goal to improve profile presentation by “getting more of the content above the fold” while also simplifying the overall aesthetic. He emphasized the importance of maintaining user control, allowing users the ability to pin posts while offering a less cluttered look. By referring to the traditional circular display of Story highlights as “pogs,” he highlighted a cultural reference that seemingly adds a quirky twist to the design dialogue within Instagram’s internal community.
While the simplification of the layout is anticipated to declutter user profiles, there are valid concerns regarding user engagement. While it is understood that the design aims for a cleaner look, one cannot ignore the potential decrease in interaction with Story highlights. After all, the very essence of stories is their ephemeral nature—users may not find a rich value in revisiting old or outdated content, potentially leading to a decline in tapping into highlights that once intrigued them.
This impending transition of highlights raising debates surrounding user interaction and retention. Instagram users tend to engage more actively with dynamic and timely content, which is not inherently conducive to Story highlights. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many users are more likely to engage with real-time stories rather than scroll through outdated content from highlights. If the accessibility of highlights decreases due to their relegation to a secondary tab, it’s possible that many users could overlook them entirely.
Nevertheless, it could also be argued that the concentrated layout may elevate the visibility of certain highlights—when users opt to explore the dedicated tab, they may interact with the content more intentionally, searching for specific interests rather than randomly stumbling upon them among a clutter of posts. It prompts a reflection on whether the new layout might cultivate a more engaged audience for curated Story content.
As Instagram prepares to implement this significant change, it remains crucial to keep an eye on user reactions and feedback. Many questions surrounding the rollout and its overall impact on user engagement are yet to be addressed.
