WhatsApp is reportedly in the works of introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will revolutionize the way users interact with the app. This new feature will allow users to engage in hands-free verbal conversations with Meta AI, the AI chatbot embedded within WhatsApp. While earlier reports suggested that users would only be able to send voice notes to Meta AI for one-way communication, the latest information indicates that the AI chatbot will also respond verbally to users.

The voice mode feature for Meta AI has been identified in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.17.16, as well as in the WhatsApp beta for iOS version 24.16.10.70. However, the feature is not yet visible in the beta version of the app, which indicates that WhatsApp is still fine-tuning the feature before making it available for public testing. Unfortunately, users who are part of the Google Play Beta program will have to wait before they can experience the Meta AI voice mode feature.

According to screenshots shared by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, users can expect to see a new voice icon in the Meta AI chat interface represented by an audio waveform. Tapping on this icon will open a bottom sheet with Meta AI displayed at the top. In the middle of the screen, users will notice a circular shape made up of multiple bubbles. At the bottom, the text “Hi, how can I help” accompanied by an expanded audio waveform icon suggests that the AI is actively listening. Additionally, screenshots reveal that the Meta AI voice mode will offer users up to 10 different voices to select from, each potentially featuring unique accents, energy levels, or tonalities.

Aside from the voice options, users may also have the ability to enable captions and transcriptions using text-to-speech during conversations with Meta AI. This feature can transcribe the entire verbal exchange into text, allowing users to refer back to the conversation at a later time. While it remains unclear when this feature will be officially rolled out to the public, it undoubtedly showcases WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing user interaction within the app through innovative AI technology.
