The Baroque wilderness-builder game Nightingale has received mixed reviews since its early access launch, with some critics calling it “a numbers grind disguised as a gaslamp survival game”. Despite initial anticipation for the game due to its fairytale setting and unique features like pop-up Pucks and magic umbrellas, it seems that the repetitive nature of building hovels on procedurally generated maps has left players wanting more.

The upcoming Realms Rebuilt update promises to breathe new life into Nightingale by introducing “handcrafted” or “Storied realms” that aim to make each dimension in the game feel more unique and differentiated. These realms, set within existing biomes, will come with their own themes, aesthetics, and challenges, offering players a more curated and structured gameplay experience. By moving away from pure procedural generation, Nightingale hopes to provide players with a more immersive and engaging journey through the game world.

Players will embark on their adventure from a new Abeyance hub realm, where they will find ancient portals leading to the Storied Realms. These handcrafted realms will be unlocked as part of the main questline, offering players the opportunity to discover and explore new environments and stories. In addition to the Storied Realms, players will also have access to procedurally generated realms for additional resources and challenges, ensuring that the game’s survival aspects remain intact.

Gameplay Changes

The Realms Rebuilt update is more than just a cosmetic overhaul. It introduces a new progression system, a Regency tileset for a different aesthetic experience, increased structure limits for more complex builds, and new gaspunk gadgetry to tinker with. These additions aim to enhance the overall gameplay experience and provide players with new tools and mechanics to experiment with.

One downside to the Realms Rebuilt update is that players will need to start a new character to fully experience the new content. However, existing Respite Realms and structures can be saved for offline visits, allowing players to revisit their creations even with a new character. This decision may be disappointing for some players, but it also presents an opportunity to start fresh and explore the game’s new features from scratch.

Will the Realms Rebuilt update be enough to turn Nightingale into a standout title? Only time will tell. While the changes introduced in this update are promising, it remains to be seen whether they will be enough to rejuvenate interest in the game. With a focus on handcrafted realms, structured storytelling, and new gameplay mechanics, Nightingale is taking a step in the right direction. Whether it can live up to the expectations of players and critics alike, however, is a different story altogether.
