Recent research conducted by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has shed light on Instagram’s failure to remove toxic comments directed at Vice President Kamala Harris and other leading female politicians as the 2024 election nears. This non-profit advocacy organization analyzed 560,000 comments on Instagram posts from five Republican and five Democratic women politicians with high levels of engagement. The comments included hateful and toxic content aimed at politicians such as Harris, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett from the Democratic party, as well as Republican House members Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert. The findings revealed over 20,000 toxic comments identified by Google’s Perspective AI tool, with 1,000 of them clearly breaching Instagram’s terms of service.
Despite the clear violation of Instagram’s policies, the CCDH researchers reported that Instagram took no action against 93% of the offensive comments flagged. This failure to enforce its own policies raises concerns about the platform’s commitment to protecting women in public life. The lack of adequate response to hate speech and abusive comments undermines the safety and well-being of female politicians who are already vulnerable to online harassment and abuse.
