Recent findings indicate that a staggering 91% of parents believe more educational initiatives are necessary to inform families about social media’s potential harms. Instead of pursuing outright bans, governments could focus on developing educational campaigns to equip parents and their children with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of social media safely.

Perhaps in response to this insight, the South Australian government has taken steps towards integrating more social media education within school curriculums. Such proactive measures not only protect young Australians but also ensure that they can leverage the productive aspects of social media while minimizing risks.

While the intention behind the proposed social media ban stems from a genuine concern for the safety of young Australians, the current strategy falls short. A balanced approach that encompasses broad education, robust safety measures across all user demographics, and accountable frameworks for tech companies will ultimately yield far better outcomes.
